17TH CENTURY BOXWOOD NOCTURNAL

Probably British. Square and octagonal brass nuts framing the sighting hole; signed "IB" by owner or maker on square brass hub nut. Complete with rotating volvelle and rotating pointer arm for alignment with the stars of the Big and Little Dippers, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor (labeled G and L respectively). Divided and stamped with scales for date, hour, lunar age and polar distance. Fine compass rose on the reverse. Handle with pierced heart design and stamped on both sides with simple rosettes.
Length 9.75". Diameter of scales 4.5".
Condition: Condition is excellent noting slight warping and minor scratches.
