EARLY 20TH CENTURY TEAR DROP FRAME SEXTANT
Tear drop frame sextant, circa 1900
$300-500
MAM22
This clipper ship era instrument is a fully developed brass sextant with inlaid silver scale embodying most of the features of a modern instrument. Only adding a battery-operated light for night reading, which occurred near the end of the 19th Century, and the 20th Century micrometer drum index separate it from the latest instruments. It has two sets of filters, a lignum vitae handle, two alternate telescopes and a mahogany storage case. In the hands of an experienced navigator, it could locate his position with one mile accuracy.
