POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH ATTRIBUTED TO THE NAVAL ENGAGEMENT ENGRAVER

Both sides with busy whaling scenes with whaleboats at various stages of capture, surfaced whales and whaleships flying "B" house flags. On the obverse, four whaleboats are in the water, one under sail heading toward a pod of whales, one of the whales is waifed, and a lookout is visible in the ship's crow's nest. On the reverse, the ship is cutting in and trying out and two whaleboats are in the water. A highly polished tooth with fine draftsmanship, distinctive blue-green seas and sharp triangular sails, all characteristic of the otherwise-anonymous Naval Engagment Engraver.
Length 6.5".
