  • Provenance:
Sir Joshua Reynolds, Colnaghi Gallery, London.
    Dr. Robin Adair.

    Notes:
The back of this drawing provides interesting provenance details that contribute to its value. One piece is a label from noted Italian art dealer P. & D. Colnaghi of London. This firm started in the 18th Century, continues today and was the leader in Old Master drawings and paintings starting in the 19th Century. Handwritten in black ink across the top of this label is the attribution to Ludovico Carracci and "sketch for the fresco in San Fillippo Neri, Bologna later removed to Madonna della Galleria" written by Sir Joshua Reynolds. In similar writing along the label bottom "From the collection of Sir Joshua Reynolds see his autobiographic inscription on the back under the mount signed J.B.S.". The initials belong to James "Jim" Byum Shaw (1903-1992), an art historian and scholar who joined Colnaghi in 1935 and ran the drawing department from 1937 to 1968. So we can assume the drawing was acquired by the consignors, the Adairs, during those years. This label alone implies attribution support and value.

British artist Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1798) amassed an extensive collection of drawings after having traveled all around Italy including Bologna. For more on his collecting please see the Kenwood Library YouTube talk by Dr. Donato Esposito "The Artist as Collector: Sir Joshua Reynolds", including details regarding the Reynolds estate stamp. He also notes an attribution to LC that has been reassigned to students.

Revealed on the back is a note "Painted in fresco in Bologna afterwards removed (with the wall on which it was painted) to a convent the name of which I forgot" by a Sir Joshua Reynolds.
