SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH SEASCAPE

A highly detailed panoramic coastal scene wraps around the base of the tooth, with an island landscape centered on the obverse and a large ship centered on the reverse. Island with a lighthouse, farmhouse, gardens and trees, cows in a field and figures standing at the edge of steep cliff, waving at two small vessels and the large ship offshore. The large ship is flying an "H" house flag from the foremast and what is presumably an American flag from the mainmast. Images of a basket of flowers, a fouled anchor within a foliate wreath, and a spread-wing Liberty eagle.
Length 5.5".
Condition: Sizable but clean age crack on obverse, approx. 4.75". Other smaller cracks/age lines on reverse. Age lines at tip, some just beginning to separate. Small, shallow and mostly unobtrusive chip at one of the age lines near tip. Small paint flecks near tip, probably removable.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
