  • Provenance: Notes:
American marine painter Warren Sheppard was born in Greenwich, New Jersey. He lived most of his life in the area of New Jersey and New York, but he spent summers in New Hampshire, painting seascapes off the Isles of Shoals, a group of small islands and tidal ledges six miles off shore that were a popular artist community in the Late 19th Century.

Sheppard learned the art of marine painting under Dutch maritime artist Mauritz Frederick Hendrick de Haas, who had moved to New York the same year Sheppard was born. Although he worked closely under de Haas, Sheppard developed his own style and viewpoint. Many of his works are in the style of American luminous painters like Fitz Henry Lane, William Bradford and James E. Buttersworth.

From 1880 to 1899, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design, where his "Moon Rise on the Ocean" commanded $1,500 in 1896. He was also known for his expertise as a racing yacht designer and navigator.
