ANTIQUE AMERICAN FEDERAL DROP-LEAF TABLE First Quarter of the 19th Century
Believed to be from the shop of Duncan Phyfe. In Santo Domingo mahogany with select woods used in top and leaves. Four acanthus-carved posts set on an oval plinth supported by four legs with extensive foliate carvings. Carved hairy paw feet with brass-mounted casters and unusual rope-turned cuff at ankles. Height 28.5". Length 38.75". Width 23.75" plus 12" drop leaves.
Provenance: According to an accompanying handwritten note and receipt, the table was purchased from Duncan Phyfe and belonged to Sarah Cady (1788-1818), daughter of David Cady, who married George Smith (1784-1828), all of Schenectady, New York. The table was inherited by their son, David Cady Smith (1813-1908), and it descended in the family until 1945. Helen Joyce, also of Schenectady, took ownership of the table in 1945, then sold it to Mrs. Gregory W. Grover of Canton, Massachusetts for $175.00 on April 15, 1946.
