  • Provenance:
    Skinner, Inc., Boston, June 2006.
The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts.

    Note:
Built by Enos Briggs, on land adjacent to Derby Wharf in Salem, this was the first vessel built by Briggs at Salem. Modeled after the second of four vessels named
Grand Turk , and to replace an earlier 300-ton vessel, she was laid down March 27, 1790. Launched sideways (with difficulty) from Derby Wharf on March 10, 1791, the three-decker known as "Mr. Derby's Great Ship" proved too big for Salem Harbor and had difficulty finding sufficient cargoes. She was subsequently sold to Boston interests in 1795 after only two voyages for Elias Derby, and then made passages to India, China and Russia. She was wrecked in a gale off Portland, Maine on January 4, 1798.
