According to the original owner, the painting depicts his great-uncle, who was a personal friend of the artist. The painting was based on a photograph provided by the sitter. The building in the back is supposedly the Dawes & Company Brewery in Montreal, Quebec.

Condition: Original canvas (not re-lined). UV light reveals no restoration. Light craquelure. Soiled varnish layer. As found condition.
Provenance: Originally consigned to Eldred's in 2009, from a private Quebec Collection. At that time, it was noted that Dawes & Co. Brewery - was in Quebec Canada, purportedly on Lachine Street and depicted the then consignor's great uncle. It is unknown if he was in fact related to the Dawes. No other writing on wagon noted and no reference to the date painted.
