ATTRIBUTED TO CARL FREDERIK SORENSEN
Danish, 1818-1879
The Battle of Lissa, 1866. Signed illegibly lower left.
Provenance:
A New England Institution.
The Battle of Lissa, or the Battle of Vis, was a naval action fought between a British squadron of frigates and a larger French and Italian fleet on March 13, 1811, during the Adriatic campaign of the Napoleonic Wars. The engagement was for possession of the island of Lissa, where a British squadron had been disrupting French shipping in the Adriatic. The French needed to control the Adriatic to supply a growing army in the Illyrian Provinces, and consequently dispatched a force in March 1811 consisting of six frigates, numerous smaller craft and a battalion of Italian soldiers. This force was quickly defeated by the Royal Navy, under the command of Captain William Hoste, a protege of Admiral Lord Nelson.
Oil on canvas, 34" x 47". Framed 51" x 37".
