  • Provenance: Notes:
This work is presumably a study for Grant Wood's 1931 oil painting "Fall Plowing", set in the
rolling fields of Iowa. Known for his depictions of the American Midwest and its agrarian culture, the work celebrates the newly developed walking plough and steel plowshare commonly used by farmers in this time period, but it also encapsulates the historical context of the Great Depression and its impact on American society. Through its depiction of a hardworking farmer in the Midwest, the painting symbolizes the determination and resilience of the American people during this challenging period. It also aligns with the artistic and cultural movements of the time, particularly the American Modernist Movement and its focus on regionalism, American identity and social commentary. "Fall Plowing" serves as a powerful visual representation of the historical realities and artistic developments of the 1930s, providing a poignant window into a defining era in American history.
