CARVED AND PAINTED WOODEN DERBY HORSE ATTRIBUTED TO MARCUS CHARLES ILLIONS & SONS Long Island, Early 20th Century
Gray and black horse with red, white and blue patriotic motif. Once part of the "Racing Derby" ride at Steeplechase Park, Coney Island. The Pryor & Church "Racing Derby" was patented in 1922 by Fred Church. This example was discovered in the late 1960s in a Brooklyn, New York storage garage, and purchased by a man from Cherry Hill, New Jersey. For twenty years his children played on it in his backyard, after which it was sold to Fowler's Florists in College Town, Pennsylvania. The consignor purchased it from the florist in 1998 and had it restored in 2001 after the September 11th tragedy, hence the patriotic motif. Mounted on a wooden stand painted black. Height 45". Length 90". Depth 13". Overall height 59".

Condition: Restored and repainted in 2001.
