Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. • Provenance: Notes:
Charles K. Van Riper was a writer, inventor and sports aficionado who began making models after he was seriously injured playing polo. While his first model was a ferry made for his young son from scrap wood and metal, his entrepreneurial spirit quickly led to mass producing quality scale models. He opened an eponymous shop in Vineyard Haven, on the island of Martha's Vineyard, in 1933, but chose to use the traditional Dutch spelling "Van Ryper" instead of "Van Riper".

The shop's assembly line craftsmanship and Van Riper's clever marketing made the models affordable, practical and popular souvenirs for several years. In the late 1930s and into the World War II years, the shop also produced thousands of recognition models, which were used to teach sailors and aviators how to identify enemy warships. Following the war, Van Ryper expanded its offerings to include model-embellished housewares and model kits. The shop closed after Van Riper became critically ill in the early 1960s.
