CHINA TRADE PAINTING DEPICTING WHAMPOA ANCHORAGE Chinese, Circa 1840
A beautifully rendered scene of Whampoa, where traders were required to anchor their ships to load and unload cargo that would be ferried to Canton. In the foreground eleven ships sit at anchor, two flying American flags, two flying English flags and six flying French flags. Several small Chinese vessels are interspersed amongst the Western ships. Beyond the ships are three islands, the center with several buildings and a tower at the far left corner. At the horizon is a series of gentle hills and a second tall tower at left. The bright blue sky is filled with puffy clouds with purple and pink highlights. Housed in its original frame. Oil on canvas, 18" x 23.5". Framed 22" x 27.5".

A similar China Trade painting of Whampoa anchorage is illustrated in "The Decorative Arts of The China Trade" by Carl L. Crossman (England: Antique Collectors' Club, 1991), p.114.

Provenance:
Hyland Granby Antiques, February 2, 2005.

From the Folk Art & Americana Collection of Carl and Sonia Schmitt.
