Condition: The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.

  • Provenance:
According to an accompanying note from Bill, he purchased this urn from Hyman Grossman, Boston, who had acquired it from the widow of Guy Lowell (1870-1927), the architect of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, having descended in Lowell's family.
The Estate of Dr. William E. Strole, Jr. of Boston.

    Reference:
A nearly identical pair of urns to this example was illustrated in
Antiques , March 1986, p. 603, fig. 4. The pair was brought to America in 1792 by Major Samuel Shaw (1754-1794), the first American to oversee direct trade with China, for his sister-in-law Abigail Phillips Quincy (1745-1798). The pair is now part of the Historic New England Collection, accession numbers 1982.3.1AB and 1982.2.2AB, from the Josiah Quincy House in Wollaston, Massachusetts.

Given the intermarriages and social connections between the Lowell, Quincy and Shaw families of Boston's "Brahmin" upper class, it can be suggested this urn was also brought back by Shaw at the same time and given as a gift to a Lowell family member, where it descended through generations to Guy Lowell.
