Approx. 150 handwritten and printed documents, all relating to matters in the area of Taunton, Massachusetts, also mostly relating to Samuel White, Esq. Includes a bound book of writs etc., and receipts for payments of debts. Many accompanied by original sealing wax. Notable items include legal documents signed by judges of Massachusetts Probate and the Massachusetts towns of Attleboro, Berkley, Dartmouth, Dighton, Freetown, Hopkinton, New Bedford, Norton, Randolph, Raynham, Rehoboth, Somerset, Swansey, Taunton, Troy and Westport. One designates a woman as the head of an estate, which required grammatical adjustments to the document.
From the Baylies Family of Dighton, Massachusetts. The family of merchants was highly connected tot he early foundation of the American Revolution and the nascent government that came as a result. Family members served in the Continental Congress and the U.S. Congress and as ambassadors.
