  • Provenance:
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Wayne Teater, 1963.
    Edenhurst Gallery, Los Angeles.
    The Kelton Foundation Collection.
  • Literature:
Sketches and Paintings From Mexico with Commentaries by Dorothy Gleason by Duncan Gleason (Ward Ritchie Press,1963, limited edition of 500 copies), illustrated p.41.

In November and December 1947 the Gleasons made an automobile trip through Mexico. Duncan brought along his "sketching gear" (p. 3), but the oil paintings that derived from this trip, including "The Orange Market", would have been made later in the artist's Los Angeles studio, based on the his sketches. When Duncan created the oils, his wife Dorothy posed for many of the figures in the paintings (see notes p. 37), and the female subject seen here retains vestiges of her features.

The original inspiration for this painting likely derives from the vicinity of Zimapan. This area is described (p. 8-9) as one with adobe brick buildings with thatched palm fronds roofs and a successful orange-growing section in a district where the Otomi live. The thatched-roof adobe house, the children with indigenous features and the oranges seen here correspond to the Gleason description of the area.
