Probably Marblehead, Late 18th Century

ESSEX COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER

Wrought by Wealthy Huntington and dated 1792. Upper half with rows of alphabets and numerals, the maker's inscription and verse "Why should I say tis yes too soon; to think of heavn[sic] and look on death, a flower may fade before tis noon and I this day may lose my breath". Text separated by tassels tied in a bow. Potted flower within a floral wreath below maker's inscription. Lower half with scene of a white farmhouse, an apple tree, a bird and a rooster. Flowering vine border. Worked in silk on linen.
15.25" x 11.5" sight. Framed 17.75" x 14".
Condition: Original condition. Lightly cleaned. 19th century painted frame not original to the sampler.
