EUCLIDES SILVEIRA DA ROSA MODEL OF A FULL-RIGGED SHIP

Note: Euclides Silveira da Rosa (1910-1979) is considered a master craftsmen in fig pith carving, an art form that dates back as far as the 16th Century on the island of Faial in the Azores. Fig pith is obtained from small stems of fig trees, which are cultivated throughout the Azores. Pith tissue is milky white and extremely light and delicate. Layers of tissue are glued together to acquire shape and volume, and are worked with tweezers, scalpels and pins. A large number of da Rosa's work is in the permanent collection of the Horta Regional Museum on the island.

Condition: Hull cracked in four places. Water also seems cracked.
