EXCEPTIONAL POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW PANBONE PLAQUE WITH WHALING SCENE

Finely detailed, crisply engraved and wonderfully creative example of whalemen art depicting an active coastal whaling scene with three whaleships, several whales at various stages of capture, and six whaleboats. One of the barks is sailing into the scene from the left and another is at the center horizon, sailing at an angle toward the viewer, and four of the whaleboats are sailing in and out of the scene, providing a sense this is a "snapshot" of a moment in time in the life of a whaleman. Barks with false gunports and detailed rigging. One of the whaleboats is under sail and some are fast to whales. Other whales are surfacing, baring their teeth, breaching or diving. Banded border with stylized foliate design at the corners. Panel's upper corners are pierced and lower corners are notched, probably for the original mounting. Presently mounted to a custom-made mahogany easel stand (also wired for hanging).
Panbone 8" x 14.25". Backboard 10" x 16.25".
