EXCEPTIONAL SCRIMSHAW AND INLAID LAP DESK, ONCE BELONGING TO CAPTAIN GEORGE DOUGLAS American, Circa 1840
In walnut with extensive polychrome scrimshaw whalebone and whale ivory inlay. Top, front and sides with whalebone string inlay, inlaid whale ivory five-pointed stars at corners and an inlaid whale ivory diamond border. Top with central inlaid and scrimshaw neoclassical design of two female figures wearing robes, one holding an artist palette and the other a scroll, flanking a beautifully engraved American Native with outstretched arms. The figures are standing upon a plinth with busts at corners, one of William Shakespeare. Thirteen inlaid five-pointed stars form an arch over the figures. Front with an inlaid ivory escutcheon with magnificent polychrome scrimshaw engraving of an American shield with draped American flags. Below the escutcheon is an inlaid and engraved spread-wing eagle holding a vacant banner in its beak. Flanking the central decoration are beautifully engraved naval vessels flying oversize polychrome wavy American flags. Both sides with inlaid panels engraved with "trompe l'oeil"-style flip-up handles and outstanding floral and foliate designs. Interior fitted with typical configuration of compartments and writing surface. Retains an old paper label in the interior with handwritten inscription: "This belonged to a captain George Douglas - in the Alaskan trade. His niece sold it to me - its never been out of the family. Hillcrest Road 1930". Height 5.75". Width 16". Depth 8.5".

Condition: The leather writing surface has been replaced. The right-hand veneer border at the bottom of the writing surface has also been replaced. To compensate for a warp in the box, a wooden wedge has been applied to the rear left top surface, allowing the box to close properly in the front. Recently cleaned.

Pick up of smaller items at our Mystic, CT location is also available with advance notice.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide shipping quotes until the invoice had been paid in full.
In house shipping is offered exclusively though UPS. All items are shipped with UPS insurance (max. $50,000). UPS insurance is billed at $2.70 for the first $100 and at $0.90 per hundred afterwards. Eldred's charges a minium $15 handling fee per package plus actual UPS shipping charges.
COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
