  • Provenance:
    Estate of Rodney Hilton Brown
    Private Massachusetts Collection

    Notes:
Sculptor Felix W. de Weldon, who was serving at the time in Maryland with the U.S. Navy, was so moved by Rosenthal's image that he almost immediately constructed a maquette for a sculpture of it, completed over the course of one weekend. Within the year he had carved a nine-foot limestone statue of it.

De Weldon won the commission for the Marine Corps Memorial after it was approved by Congress in 1951. He spent three years creating a full-size plaster model, the figures 32 feet in height, which was then used to cast the final bronze statue. The cost of $850,000 was paid for entirely with donations; no public funds were used.
