FIVE CONNECTICUT ELECTION SERMONS 1789-1809
1) "A Sermon, Delivered in Presence of His Excellency Samuel Huntington, Esq. L.L.D. Governor ... on the Day of the Anniversary Election. May 14th, 1789. By Ammi R. Robbins, A.M., Pastor of the Church in Norfolk." (Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1789.) Robbins celebrates the adoption of the Constitution and the inauguration of Washington. 2) "A Sermon Preached Before His Excellency Samuel Huntington ... on the Day of the Anniversary Election. May 9th, 1793. By Charles Backus, A.M. Pastor of a Church in Somers." (Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1793.) Somers preaches on the importance of Christian virtue in the "civil rulers" of the new republic. Marbled wraps, possibly original, inscribed "A very good Sermon". 3) "The Necessity of the Belief of Christianity by the Citizens of the State, in order to our political Prosperity; Illustrated in a Sermon, Preached Before His Excellency Samuel Huntington ... on the Day of the Anniversary Election. May 8th, 1794 by Jonathan Edwards, D.D., Pastor of a Church in New-Haven." (Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1794.) Believed to be a first edition. Edwards argues "political prosperity requires the general practice of a strict morality." 4) "Absalom's Conspiracy: A Sermon, Preached at the General Election, ... May 10th, 1798. By Azel Backus, A.M. Pastor of a Church in Bethlem." (Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1798.) An attack on Thomas Jefferson. 5) "A Sermon Preached at Hartford, in Connecticut, on the General Election. May 11th, 1809. By Samuel Nott, A.M. Pastor of the Church in Franklin." (Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1809.) Nott claims "were religion generally to prevail, party spirit would cease, our political horizon brighten ...".

Condition: All generally well preserved for their age and use. Collations not verified.
1) Evidence of binding on spine. Various ink inscriptions on title page. Water stain. Other areas of soiling. Evenly toned. Last page with minor chips and other small losses. 2) Wraps faded and missing at spine. Even toning. Foxed. Soiled. Other ink inscriptions. Pages curled at lower corner. Embossed library stamp. 3) Toned. Foxed. Remnants of binding on spine. Pinholes along outer margins of late pages. Last page starting to come loose. 4) Folded and stitched with no evidence of further binding. Ink iscription on half title page. Evidence of water damage. Pages with minor curling at corners. 5) Toned. Foxed. Ink marking on half title page. Evidence of binding on spine. One page creased at upper corner.

We require prompt payment and removal of your purchases as stated in Paragraph 12 of the Conditions of Sale. If you plan to pick up your purchases, please call ahead and we'll make every effort to have your items ready. Our physical address is 1483 Route 6A, East Dennis, MA. Pick up of smaller items at our Mystic, CT location is also available with advance notice.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide shipping quotes until the invoice had been paid in full.
In house shipping is offered exclusively though UPS. All items are shipped with UPS insurance (max. $50,000). UPS insurance is billed at $2.70 for the first $100 and at $0.90 per hundred afterwards. Eldred's charges a minium $15 handling fee per package plus actual UPS shipping charges.
COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
