Schooner moored off Woods Hole, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Signed lower right "F.L Gifford". Handwritten note by the artist affixed verso tells the story of privateers capturing a schooner carrying a cargo of corn in April 1779, just as the schooner was entering Vineyard Sound on her way to Woods Hole. The distressed captain organized a group of men the following day to head out in whaleboats and recaptured the schooner by force, to the great joy of locals.

    Transcription of artist's note verso:
    "April 1779 at one time a schooner was sent to the Connecticut River for corn, which had become –r---ely scarce then selling here at --- limits $3 per bushel. The schooner was intensified by a privateer as she was just entering Vinyard Sound, and the captain crashed in his boat before she was captured and arrived at Col. Dimmick's at Falmouth about midnight in greate distress at the loss of his vessel and her valuable cargo. Col. Dimmick mustered 20 men and started for Woods Hole. They there procured 3 whaleboats and pulled to Tarpaulin Cove. They arrived there before day light set day light. They discovered ...(piece is torn off)... English Privateer with her prize in the cove and immediately pulled for the prize. Thy men fired from both vessels and thy returned the fire wounding one man of the privateer. Thy boarded to secure the prize and g------y getting her underway bought her in to Woods Hole ---- ----, great joy of the inhabitants.
