GILBERT CHARLES STUART
Massachusetts/Rhode Island, 1755-1828

Portrait of Mary Binney Sargent. Unsigned. Gilbert Stuart scholar and author Lawrence Parks notes in his 1926 work on the artist:
This circa 1805 half-length portrait depicts a young Mary Binney turned three-quarters to the right with her eyes directed to the spectator. Her smooth hair is very plainly dressed with curls on her forehead. She wears a square-cut, light silk dress edged with a narrow tulle ruffle. A dark shawl with a colored border is draped over her left shoulder and around her right arm. The background is plain.

Mary Binney Sargent was the daughter of Doctor Barnabas and Mary (Woodrow) Binney of Philadelphia and the sister of Horace Binney, who became a well-known lawyer and member of Congress. A Stuart portrait of Horace Binney at age 20 is part of the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Mary Binney married Lucius Manlius Sargent (1786-1867), an author and temperance advocate from Boston, in 1816. Their son, Horace Binney Sargent, served as Colonel of the Massachusetts 1st Cavalry during the Civil War.

Condition: Good condition, appears to be untouched and as found with what appears to be original paint, nice texture to her ruffle, and no inpaint noted, and only a few minor dots of white dirt in and around her face, and scuffs to the extreme edges of the boards from rubbing against the liner of the frame. Quarter sized imperfection to wood at her decolletage, a knot that shows through from both sides, but does not affect the paint.
