GILDED FIGUREHEAD IN THE FORM OF A MERMAID
Probably from the American steam yacht Hi-Esmaro, circa 1929.
A high-style and elegant figurehead in which the mermaid's head and torso would project from the bow and her long hair and tail would wrap around the sides of the hull like trailboards. The mermaid's facial features are beautifully rendered and her hair sweeps down her back in six graduated wave-like curves. Her arms are tucked down close to her body. She has carved incised scales that run from the waistline to the tail fluke, which has a smoother but well-articulated surface. The entire carving has a gilded surface, creating an extremely dramatic effect. Length 74". Width 26". Depth 24".

By the end of the 19th Century, the American merchant fleet was no longer adorning newly constructed vessels with traditional ship carvings, however, the tradition was maintained, and in some cases elevated, to adorn the sumptuous private American and English yachts of the period. This figurehead was designed and carved at a time when American yachts were at their most opulent.

The 237-foot
Hi-Esmaro was owned by H.E. Manville. She was designed by Henry Gielow and built by Bath Iron Works in 1929. A model of the vessel showing the gilded mermaid figurehead is at the New York Yacht Club Harbor Court Club House. Manville sold the Hi-Esmaro to the U.S. Navy in 1940. Renamed Niagara , she was converted to a coastal minelayer and then a patrol gunboat. She was bombed by the Japanese and sank in the Pacific in 1943.

Alden Identification Service analyzed a wood sample from this figurehead and determined it to be Araucariaceae, a very rare wood. Alden believes this particular species came from New Zealand.

Provenance:
Richard A. Bourne Company Rare Marine Antiques, Whaling Artifacts and Memorabilia from Various American Collections Auction, August 1-2, 1978, Lot #265.
Hyland Granby Antiques, February 1, 2000.

From the Folk Art & Americana Collection of Carl and Sonia Schmitt.
