"John Shepperd" of Boston, built in Newburyport in 1875; and insurance certificate for said bark dated 1878; portage bill; and other ship's documents, account and bills. Also included are two account books, as well as two personal account books of Capt. Burgess. These books deal with voyages in the schooners "Aurelia P. Howes", "Edward Kidder", "Typhoon", and the "Elizabeth B.", during the 1860's. An interesting three-page folio manuscript account of a voyage on the "Typhoon" is bound in. Also included is a copy of the agreement between Capt. Burgess and Mr. George Currier of Newburyport, Mass. for the building of the barkentine "John Shepperd". This bark cost $36,800. It was built according to the same plan as the schooner, William Herrick just built for Eleazar K. Crowell of Dennisport. Although Burgess was the agent, the bark was owned by Shepperd & Norwell of Boston. This three and one-half page folio document contains all the specifications for the bark, as well as the payment schedule. This lot includes Capt. Burgess" sea chest with secret drawer in front apron. The chest is painted green and has iron beckets. It measures 21" x 43" x 19". [Illustrated] Notes of local interest: The "Elizabeth B." was built in North Dennis in 1847. As of 1877, she was registered in Newport. The schooner "Typhoon" was from Chatham. In 1877, the "Edward Kidder" was registered in Harwich. Capt. Burgess retired from the sea in 1779/80, and became a well-known merchant in Harwich.
