IMPORTANT LOT PERTAINING TO THE AMERICA'S CUP DEFENDER RESOLUTE
Includes an Early 20th Century pond model of the J-class yacht Resolute, and a rare and exceptional logbook from the Resolute with entries from May 2 to August 5, 1914, many pertaining to elimination races leading up to the America's Cup race. Most entries handwritten in pencil; some are typed. Detailed entry for Tuesday, August 4th covers a race between the Resolute and the Vanitie, in which the Resolute finished in 4 hours, 40 minutes, 57 seconds and the Vanitie in 4 hours, 43 minutes and 37 seconds. Entry for Wednesday, August 5th reads: "Bob came onboard 11 p.m. & told us racing was off for the year." (The first battle of World War I began that day when the German army launched an assault on Liege, Belgium.) Contemporary pictorial cloth binding. Pond model with full set of sails, a wooden hull and stand. Height on stand 58.25". Overall length 48.25".
The Resolute was the last America's Cup defender designed and built by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff. Owned by a syndicate of New York Yacht Club members, she was christened by Grace Vanderbilt and launched April 25, 1914. In defender selection trials that spring and summer she beat both the Vanitie and Defiance and set a course record off Sandy Hook.

After the outbreak of World War I in August of 1914, the America's Cup races were postponed. When racing re-commenced in 1920, the
Resolute prevailed in the trials and successfully defended the Cup in July against the Shamrock IV.

Condition: Defender in overall good condition with minor dirt to yacht and discoloration to sail, rigging appears to be intact.

Shipment of purchases can take 4-6 weeks from date of payment. All shipping charges are subject to packing and handling fees. Given the unique nature of many lots, special handling may be required and commensurate charges would be applied.

Shipping

We require prompt payment and removal of your purchases as stated in Paragraph 12 of the Conditions of Sale. If you plan to pick up your purchases, please call ahead and we'll make every effort to have your items ready. Our physical address is 1483 Route 6A, East Dennis, MA 02641. Pick up days are Mondays and Tuesdays.
We provide shipping services directly from our gallery, however eligibility is based on an item's dimensions. Shipments from our gallery may take four to six weeks. We pack and ship small items, small paintings and rugs. Larger items will be transferred to an alternative shipping agent upon your approval. Our staff can assist you with determining if your items qualify. If we are unable to accommodate you, we will provide a list of alternative shipping agents. Allow 7 to 10 business days for checks to clear our bank prior to packing and shipping, or releasing purchases to your chosen shipping agent. Items are sent C.O.D. unless you supply a credit card number. You will be charged for the shipping or carrier fees, packing/handling fees, and the required insurance. There is a minimum handling charge of $15.00 for all shipments. Depending on the carrier, insurance limits may exist (ie: Federal Express will only insure up to $500). Shipping estimates can be given only AFTER we receive your payment and form.

COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
