  • Provenance: Notes:
Toward the end of the 19th Century, whalers discovered that some of the last populations of bowhead whales lived in the area of Herschel Island, in the Arctic's Beaufort Sea. Whalers would over-winter on the remote island, their ships trapped in the ice, so they could commence whaling as soon as the weather allowed, maximizing the profits of short Arctic whaling seasons. The often engaged in games of soccer to pass the time. At its peak, it is believed as many as 1,500 people wintered on the island in wooden structures, making it the Yukon's largest community at that time.

John Bertoncini was an amateur painter and whaling captain of the "Jeanette" of San Francisco. Known as "Johnny the Painter", he chronicled life in the Hershel Island encampments in a series of paintings. Bertoncini Island in Alaska's Jones Islands is named for him.
