JOHN F. KENNEDY'S PT-109 TIE CLIP
Gold-colored tie clip in the form of patrol torpedo boat PT-109 in water, with "Kennedy" etched into the hull. Housed in a wooden frame with a letter of authenticity on White House stationery from Martin Underwood, special assistant to the president, dated January 1964. Clip height .75". Length 2.75". Framed 9.85" x 7.85".

PT boats are closely associated with John F. Kennedy, who commanded one during World War II and who heroically endeavored to save members of his PT-109 crew after it sank in the Solomon Islands in 1943. The PT-109 tie clips were made in the 1960s and were highly coveted by Kennedy-era officials.
On November 21, 1963, a mere 18 hours before his assassination, President Kennedy wore this tie clip at a testimonial dinner in Houston. Kennedy's special assistant, Martin Underwood, took this clip from the president's tie that night and replaced it with an identical one.
