JOHN FULTON FOLINSBEE
American, 1892-1972

"Village Street (Woodstock)". Signed lower right "John Folinsbee". Titled verso "John F. Folinsbee Woodstock N.Y".
Exhibited: Ferargil Galleries, 1917.
Literature: Folinsbee Considered
by Kirsten M. Jensen (2013), p. 224.
Note: Commentary from the John F. Folinsbee Catalogue Raisonné reads: "Although the inscription on the verso of the board suggests a Woodstock scene, Folinsbee's logbook also contains a reference to a painting titled 'Village Street (New Hope)', which would imply a date of at least 1916, and it is unlikely that he would have used the Woodstock address at that point in time--although he had painted and exhibited there during the summer of 1916. However, the artist's brushwork, which relies more on the 'lost-edge' technique taught by his mentors Birge Harrison and John Carlson than the more structured approach he began employing a few years later, as well as his palette suggest instead that this is a Woodstock subject with an earlier date." (Source: johnfolinsbee.org/catalogue/entry.php?catNo=240).
Provenance: Ferargil Galleries, New York.
Private Collection, Connecticut.
.
Oil on board, 8.25" x 10.25". Framed 13" x 16".
