KENTUCKY FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY AL WHITE Sandwich, Massachusetts, 20th Century
Made in the John Armstrong style. .44 cal. Octagonal barrel with engraved signature "AAW". Burled walnut stock with silver inlay in compass rose, eagle and Liberty shield and shell designs. Brass trigger guard. Very minor wear. Length of barrel 8.5". Overall length 12.75".
Alvin "Al" White, who worked for decades as the master engraver for Colt, has an international reputation for his firearms engravings and was a noted gunsmith, scrimshander, sculptor and jewelry maker. He grew up in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and joined the Army Air Corps in 1942, serving in Africa and the Pacific. He began engraving firearms in the 1920s, and throughout his distinguished career his work was featured in numerous publications and he received commissions for presentation weapons for John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and other officials and celebrities. He retired to Sandwich, Massachusetts, and died in 2006 at age 91.
