LARGE AND IMPORTANT POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW PANBONE PLAQUE English, Circa 1830-1835
Depicts a South Seas whaling scene of the British ship Argus of London, two whaleboats, a whale and a distant volcano. The Argus is flying a red flag from the center mast, has one whaleboat on davits and is suspending a sheet of blubber. One whaleboat is fast to the whale, and smoke is emanating from the volcano. Scene is flanked by two architectural columns, one flying the Union Jack and one flying a British ensign. An olive leaf garland spans the distance between the two towers at the upper border. Below the garland is a small banner with "Argus". Above the garland are two holes for mounting, both surrounded by compass roses. Elongated scallop border around the perimeter. 8.5" x 18.75".
Accompanied by a letter of authentication from Stuart M. Frank, Senior Curator, New Bedford Whaling Museum. Frank writes this piece is "unequivocally and incontrovertibly" by the same hand as a similar piece depicting an Argus whaling scene that is in the Museum's permanent collection. He also writes this "... is self-evidently an outstanding masterpiece of scrimshaw art by an expert, anonymous hand, beautifully engraved ... among the finest scrimshaw of all time, and (at circa 1830-35) among the earliest." According to Frank's letter, the Argus made at least four whaling voyages from London to the South Seas, circa 1829 to 1841.
