LARGE COLLECTION OF CORRESPONDENCE PERTAINING TO RHODE ISLAND GOVERNOR JOHN BROWN FRANCIS Circa 1820-1860
More than 75 letters written primarily to and from John Brown Francis (1791-1864), ranging from personal letters to his children to letters commenting on political matters of the day. Notable items include an 1850 letter notifying Francis he had been elected a board member of the "Butler Hospital for the Insane", an 1834 letter from Francis to Welcome Johnson, presumably a member of his household, instructing he meet Francis at the steamboat dock with the "carry-all and wagon", an 1833 letter from Levi Woodbury as Secretary of the Navy denying an application for midshipman, and a series of letters addressed to Francis as governor concerning an appointment to a military academy. Some include envelopes with postage. Contained within an archival box.

Condition: Generally well preserved. Wear commensurate with age and use including toning, foxing, creases, stains, etc. Many of the letters are contained individually within a folder, with notations on the front of the folder providing date and summary of content.
