LEE HENG

China, 19th Century

China Trade portrait of the ship Agenor in Chinese waters, circa 1871.

Oil on canvas, relined, 20.75" x 26". Framed 25.75" x 31".
Condition: Overall good condition. The painting is relined. Under UV examination there is scattered in-paint to the sky, addressing the craquelure restoration. There is a broad area of reglazing in the center sky going down to the main mast. There are several other areas of detailed in-paint in the sky, sea and sails, most as a function of relining. The frame is a quality modern replacement and the painting is ready to hang.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.

    Notes:
The East Boston ship Agenor was built and launched in 1870 by Curtis & Smith for the Boston firm of E. Williams & Co. Her fastest passage around Cape Horn westward was 120 days from New York to San Francisco in 1876, and her fastest passage eastward from San Francisco to Antwerp was 113 days in 1882. She was laid up in San Francisco from October 1891 to July 1893 due to lack of business. She serviced the Puget Sound lumber trade but was sold to the American company Sale & Frazer in Yokohama. She was wrecked on a Kobe wheat run.
