NINE BROADSIDES/NEWSPAPER PAGES ON ABOLITION, SECESSION AND THE CIVIL WAR 1840s-1860s
1) "Public Meeting". Circa 1856. Calls for a meeting in Hartford, Connecticut, to support the Union and oppose the extension of slavery. Signed in print by numerous citizens. 2) "To the Freemen of New-London." Dated New-London, April 4, 1840. Vitriolic text mentions a "loco-foco-abolition ticket". 3) "A Short Appeal to Abolitionists, By One of Their Number." Signed in print by James S. Gibbons, a Quaker in New York City who was chairman of the American Anti-Slavery Society. 4) "What Genuine Democrats Think of the Rebellion." Published by the National Union Executive Committee. Double-sided. 5) "National Sentinel--Extra. Union or Disunion. Senator Clingman's Great Speech." Circa 1860. Clingman, of North Carolina, refused to resign his Senate seat and was one of ten senators expelled from the Senate in absentia. 6) "District No. 9. Bolting Free Soilers." Signed in print "A Free Soiler, Taunton, Nov. 5th, 1850." 7) "Address, To the Free Electors of the Sixth Congressional District." Dated Dec. 13, 1843. Claims "slavery is not the only question to be considered in the election of our rulers", but supports anti-slavery candidates. 8) "Free Soil Voters of Norfolk County, We have a single word to say to our friends, one and all. Vote! Vote Early! Vote Right!". Circa 1840s. Lists Charles Francis Adams, son of John Quincy Adams, as a candidate for Massachusetts legislature. Threatens "Another Victory to Slave Power" if Whigs are elected. 9) "New-Hampshire's Rally For Liberty. 'I have sworn upon the Altar of God, eternal hostility to every form of Oppression that bows down the Soul of Man.'" Circa 1860. Large image of a three-masted ship "New Hampshire" flying a large American flag off the stern and a two flags off her masts: "No More Slave Territory" and "One Country One Constitution One Destiny". Also with full-length portrait of Nathaniel S. Berry, candidate for governor.

Generally well preserved. Wear consistent with age and use, including toning, foxing, staining, creases, chipping, minor losses, etc.

We require prompt payment and removal of your purchases as stated in Paragraph 12 of the Conditions of Sale. If you plan to pick up your purchases, please call ahead and we'll make every effort to have your items ready. Our physical address is 1483 Route 6A, East Dennis, MA. Pick up of smaller items at our Mystic, CT location is also available with advance notice.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide shipping quotes until the invoice had been paid in full.
In house shipping is offered exclusively though UPS. All items are shipped with UPS insurance (max. $50,000). UPS insurance is billed at $2.70 for the first $100 and at $0.90 per hundred afterwards. Eldred's charges a minium $15 handling fee per package plus actual UPS shipping charges.
COLLECTION OF PURCHASES: Delivery or shipping arrangements must be made within seven (7) days from the close of the auction for all purchases. All items must be removed from Eldred's facilities within fourteen (14) days of the end of the auction. All items remaining after fourteen days may be subject to a $5/per item/per day storage fee. No items will be released unless storage fees are paid in full. Items remaining over thirty (30) days from the close of the auction may be sold for the buyer's account minus auction and storage fees.
