OUTSTANDING INLAID AND SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH WITH WHALING SCENE

A unique and masterful example of whaleman art. Finely rendered whaling scene wraps around the circumference, depicting a whaleship, a large pod of surfaced whales and three whaleboats, one of which is stoved and the other two engaged with different whales. Ship flies a swallowtail with a large dot at the center from the mainmast and pennant from the foremast, and a lookout is visible in the crow's nest. The whalemen from the stoved boat have been tossed akimbo by a large whale whose mouth is open, baring its teeth, and is spouting a fine mist. Above the stoved boat, near the tip of the tooth, is a Masonic compass and square nestled within a floral bouquet tied with a ribbon. Delicate floral and foliate garlands flanked by drape and tassel borders encircle the ring-carved base, interrupted by inlaid abalone hexagons studded with shell dots. Two evenly spaced inlaid abalone triangles below the hexagons. Accompanied by a copy of a letter from Dr. Stuart Frank authenticating the work as 19th Century whaleman art and describing it as "an unusual production of uncommonly fine quality: an excellent example of the scrimshanders' art -- one of the finest examples of its kind that we have seen".
