OUTSTANDING SCRIMSHAW WHALEBONE BUSK WITH WHALING SCENE AND POEM American, Circa 1840
Whaling scene extends the full length of the busk, depicting from left to right a diving whale being pursued by a whaleboat carrying six whalemen, a breeching whale about to be harpooned, a sperm whale with its mouth open facing a whaleboat carrying six whalemen, one of whom is standing at the bow of the boat and is about to throw his harpoon, and a whaleship in hove-to position, showing three pairs of empty davits on her port side, awaiting the three whaleboats presently engaged in whaling. The scene takes place in a stylized sea and multiple birds fly overhead. At left above the whaling scene is a vine-bordered cartouche containing the poem "Many A Ship Has Chased The Whale In Which This Bone Did Rest But Now Tis Made Into a Busk To Support A Females Breast". The quality of the engraving, the subject matter and the poem on this busk establish it as one of the most important examples to ever come to market. Length 15.25".
Provenance:
Hyland Granby Antiques, July 1, 1998.
From the Folk Art & Americana Collection of Carl and Sonia Schmitt.
