PAIR OF ITALIAN MAJOLICA LIFE-SIZE FIGURES OF GREAT DANES 1920s
White dogs with black spots wearing a spiked yellow collar and seated on a black plinth. Signed "C...lli." Tallest height 44". Largest base 14.5" x 22.5".
Provenance: Purchased from Mark Lawrence from the Collection of John Ringling, of the Ringling Brothers Circus, in Sarasota, Florida. A copy of a letter confirming this accompanies the lot.

Note: John Ringling was an avid collector, who frequently traveled to Europe to furnish his palatial Venetian-inspired estate, Ca' d'Zan, which he built as his winter home for himself and his wife Mabel in Sarasota in 1926.

John Ringling, born in 1866, is the most well-known of the five Ringling brothers who built a circus empire, starting with their first show in 1870, which had an admission charge of just a penny. John was responsible for booking appearances and supervising travel arrangements.

The brothers bought the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907 for $400,000 and ran the two circuses as separate entities until 1919. In 1929, John, the last remaining Ringling brother, purchased the American Circus Corporation for $1.7 million; with the acquisition, Ringling owned every traveling circus in America.
Although at one point he had been one of the richest men in the world, he lost nearly his entire fortune during the Great Depression, though he was able to retain his home and extensive art collection, which he willed to the state of Florida upon his death in 1936.

Great Danes, known as being one of the world's largest dog breeds, were a common fixture in early circuses and are often seen on circus advertisement posters. They participated in the acts and trainers also relied on them for protection against big cat attacks.
