    In
Boarders Away with Steel- Edged Weapons & Polearms by William Gilkerson, p. 102-103, Melville describes the single-stick practice he witnessed aboard the frigate United States in 1840:
"Single-stick, as everyone knows, is a delighted pastime, which consists in two men standing a few feet apart, and rapping each other over the head with long poles. There is a good deal of fun in it, so long as you as you are not hit; but a hit- in the judgement of discreet persons- spoils the sport completely. When this pastime is practiced by connoisseurs ashore, they wear heavy, wired helmets, to break the force of the blows. But the only helmets of our tars were those with which nature had furnished them".
