PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TEETH ATTRIBUTED TO THE BANKNOTE ENGRAVER

Obverses with bust portraits of fashionably dressed women. Reverse of one depicts a stemmed rose and three bleeding heart blossoms. Other depicts an exotic bird nestled in a leafy branch. Teeth encircled by leafy garlands above the images and a fine series of geometric and pique borders at the bases. Deep patina.
Lengths approx. 5.5".
Condition: Deep but uneven patina. Tooth with bird with age cracks at base extending approx. 2" into both sides. Age lines at tip.

    The delicate, feathery workmanship here is typical of that of the Banknote Engraver. Another tooth attributed to the scrimshander with a very similar floral stem is illustrated in Ingenious Contrivances, Curiously Carved by Stuart M. Frank (Boston: David R. Godine, 2012), fig. 3.12b.
