POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH Second Quarter of the 19th Century
Both sides depict whaling scenes of the barque Anne of Bristol, Rhode Island during an 1845 voyage. Obverse depicts the ship flying an American flag in foreground with extensive whaling activity in background including a stoved boat. Reverse depicts the ship and two whaleboats under sail, one sail marked "SB" and the other "LB". Whale and stoved boat surrounded by a flock of seabirds at lower center of scene and a school of porpoises on left. Inscribed along edges "Barque Anne on the Coast of Peru August 24th 1845. Lost the W. Boat and had the L. Boat Badly stove by a large Whales jaw. Night coming on, lost him." and "Barque Anne of Bristol, R.I. on the N.W. Coast June 25th 1845. A large Right Whale stove the L. Boat Badly and he was killed and sunk". Length 5.25".
