POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE''S TOOTH First Half of the 19th Century
Fitted with a carved wooden and baleen cover, allowing the tooth to function as a snuff box. Obverse depicts the three-masted sailing vessel "Ship Lion Nantucket" at sea, flying a red pennant from the midmast. Additional red markings at water line. The vessel is identified with inscription on the edge. Reverse with portrait of a scantily clad seated woman. A foliate vine and swag border encircles tip. A cross-hatch swag interspersed with inset baleen dots encircles base. Tooth length 4.25". Overall length 5".
Note: Mentions of a whaleship Lion date as early as 1802, when a vessel of that name sailed from Nantucket on a notorious voyage under the command of Captain Peter Paddack, who lost his iron when a whale he struck escaped. Thirteen years later Paddack, under the command of a different vessel, found the head of his iron when he coincidentally re-captured the same whale that had earlier escaped. ("Vanished Treasures" by Harry B. Turner, published in Historic Nantucket , Vol. 44, no. 2, 1994, p. 28-30.)
Additionally, an 1841-1844 log book from a whaleship
Lion, commanded by Charles F. Howland, is in the Dartmouth Historical Society Library, and an 1854-1856 log book of a whaleship Lion is in the collection of Providence Public Library. Both logs cover Pacific whaling voyages that originated from Providence, Rhode Island.
