POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALEBONE BUSK BY THE NAVAL ENGAGEMENT ARTIST

Central panel depicts an active whaling scene with a ship under full sail, three whaleboats in the water at various stages of capture and four surfaced whales, one of which is showing its flukes. Scattered red coloring throughout the water. Smaller panels at both ends, one depicting a ship in heavy seas, practically dismasted, and the other depicting a potted red plant. Both smaller panels with fine line borders that match the fancy scalloped carvings at the lobed and curved ends of the busk.
Length 13.75".

  • Provenance:
Purchased from the Collection of Paul Vardeman, circa May 2017. Vardeman noted it was purchased by E. Norman Flayderman at Parke-Bernet, New York, on October 5, 1963. Inscribed in ink on reverse "12K292", possibly indicating it is from the collection of Meylert Armstrong of Greenwich, Connecticut and New Hope, Pennsylvania.

    Illustrated:
Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders, Whales and Whalemen by E. Norman Flayderman (New Milford, Ct.: N. Flayderman & Co., Inc., 1972), p. 20.

    Notes:
The whaling scene here is similar to several pieces of scrimshaw attributed to the Naval Engagement Artist, notably one sold at Eldred's, The Marine Sale, August 10-11, 2023, Lot #4061, and one illustrated in Clifford Ashley's Yankee Whaleman, which is now in the collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
