The oceanliner S.S. Saale
is perhaps most well known for the damage she sustained in the Hoboken Docks Fire on June 30, 1900. She was owned by the North German Lloyd company of Bremen and was built in Glasgow in 1886. She primarily sailed between Bremen and New York until she sank in the infamous docks fire, in which 99 of her passengers and crew were killed. She was later raised and rebuilt and sold multiple times before she was broken up permanently in 1924. The Hoboken Docks Fire damaged three vessels, multiple buildings and took more than 300 lives. Following the tragedy, regulations were revised to require portholes be large enough to allow a person to escape.
