RARE CIVIL WAR SURGEON'S WOODEN TRAVEL DESK
Front with "E.B. Dalton. Surgeon. U.S.V." in gray and black lettering on a grain-painted ground. Back with a "2" within a diamond in black paint. Iron bail handle on right side. Fall-front conceals nine interior compartments. Interior of fall-front and compartment facings under blue paint. Height 19.75". Width 19". Depth 10.75".
Note: Physician Edward Barry Dalton (1834-1872) served in the Civil War as a medical officer on a gunboat, a regimental surgeon of the 36th New York Volunteers, a Medical Inspector of the 6th Army Corps, Acting Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac and Medical Director of the the 9th Army Corps. Among the hundreds of thousands under his care was General Joshua Chamberlain of Maine, who was wounded at Petersburg. Following the war Dalton served as sanitary superintendent of the New York Board of Health before retiring from poor health and moving to California. Dalton, born in Lowell, Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard in 1851 and his portrait now hangs in Memorial Hall on the campus.
Provenance: Discovered in a garage on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Condition: Top and sides with white over paint. Numerous scratches and considerable wear. Handle on left side missing. Some pieces of backboard missing. As is condition.
