RARE COLLECTION OF LETTERS FROM WHALING WIFE SYLVIA R. LEONARD OF NEW BEDFORD

Includes 31 handwritten letters, mostly written by Sylvia to her husband, John W. Leonard, master of the whaling bark Lydia during an 1854-1858 voyage to the Pacific, as well as an 1857 letter from John to his wife, written while the Lydia was in port in Honolulu. John's voyage began shortly after the couple married in May 1854, and Sylvia's letters provide chatty news of other whaleships and masters, announce the birth of their son in March 1855 and give updates on his early childhood, and offer poignant glimpses into her daily life, often reflecting her loneliness: "I often think that water or sea will separate us again" and "Nothing but your permission will ever keep me from going with you on another voyage". John returned to New Bedford in May 1858 and moved to Kansas, where he died in November 1866. Other letters include one from Sylvia to a friend in 1852; one from Sylvia to her sister in 1854, written while Sylvia and John were on their honeymoon; two from John to Sylvia in 1866 while he was in Kansas; and four letters to the Leonards by acquaintances in Kansas, which mention devastating floods, stagecoach attacks, gun fights and skirmishes with Native Americans. A 1983 newspaper clipping and genealogical notes about the Leonards are also included. Contained within a three-ring binder. Many of letters have been transcribed partially or in whole.
Condition: Letters with expected wear, including fading and toning, creases and some losses. Most are legible.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
