RARE FRENCH FIRST-STANDARD SILVER TOILETTE SET BY ANDRE AUCOC OF PARIS Late 19th Century
In the original solid oak case. Silver engraved with coronet and monogram. Consists of four blown glass decanters, covered boxes, candlesticks, etc. in top compartment, and combs, brushes, etc. in bottom compartment. Bottom compartment items all bear 18kt gold Crown monograms.
The Aucoc family firm at 6 Rue de la Paix, Paris was established in 1821 and enjoyed the patronage of King Louis Philippe, Napoleon III, and Empress Eugenie among other prominent families. Specializing in high quality necessaires, the firm's work was shown at the French national exhibitions of 1827, 1839, and 1844. They even won a prize medal for their traveling cases at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London. Luxurious articles de toilette from Aucoc are mentioned alongside Odiot during the sale of a prominent courtesan's estate in the opening pages of Alexandre Dumas's The Lady of the Camellias. Under goldsmith Louis Aucoc the firm produced Art Nouveau jewelry and employed a young Rene Lalique as an apprentice. André Aucoc succeeded his brother Louis and returned the firm's focus to high-quality silver articles, usually in the style of Louis XV or XVI. Necessaires de toilette such as this one were made to order and often given as gifts commemorating important events, such as a marriage or the birth of an heir. The contents could be customized to include specific vessels, materials, and decorations favored by the recipient. The wealth required to necessitate, fill, and transport such a kit meant they were owned only by a precious few.

Approx. 88. 4 troy oz. weighable.
