RARE PAIR OF POLYCHROME ENGRAVED WHALE'S TEETH COMMEMORATING NEW BEDFORD MAYOR MORGAN ROTCH

Displayed together on a walnut base mounted with a silver plaque inscribed "Morgan Rotch Mayor 1885 1888 New Bedford Board of Trade". One tooth depicts the seal of New Bedford and a whaleship flying an American and other flags on the obverse, and a young child and a young man wearing a top hat on the reverse. Other tooth depicts a stately home, possibly the William J. Rotch Gothic Revival cottage, on the obverse, and a finely dressed young man and an elegant woman on the reverse.
Teeth lengths 7" and 7.5". Stand 8.25" x 14".

    Notes:
    Morgan Rotch (1848-1910), the son of William J. and Emily Morgan Rotch, was a member of the wealthy and influential Rotch family that was closely associated with the whaling industries of Nantucket and New Bedford. William J. Rotch served as the second mayor of New Bedford and built his Gothic Revival cottage at 19 Irving Street in 1845. Designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, it is now on the National Register of Historic Places. His son Morgan, who was the 19th mayor of New Bedford, also resided there.
