RARE TALL-CASE CLOCK BY JESSE EMORY Weare, New Hampshire, Late 18th Century
Maple case. Bonnet and case with exposed dovetail construction. Bonnet's broken arch pediment with carved rosettes and three turned wooden finials. Glazed arched panel dial door flanked by turned columns. Delicate fluted panels behind columns at either side of door. Case with arched pendulum door and a flat molded base. Painted wooden dial with Roman numerals, calendar dial and red and deep green floral designs at corners. Thirty-hour wooden works. Height 86.5". Width 21". Depth 11". Retains pendulum with a replaced bob. Original soapstone weights.
Jesse Emory was known for making some of the finest wooden clockworks. While he made works for other casemakers, it is believed that both the case and the works for this clock were made by him. Approximately a dozen Emory tall-clocks are known to exist, making this an extremely rare piece.
